Ayahuasca: Remedy From Amazon Tribe Could Treat Depression

In general, Ayahuasca is known as a medicinal herb from the Amazon tribes. But according to two studies published in the journal Revista Brasileira de Psiquiatria (2015) and the Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology (2016), this herb acts as an anti-depressant that works fast yet durable. Clinical study of traditional medicine was conducted by a group of researchers from Brazil and Spain. Apart from being an anti-depressant, the effect of Ayahuasca retreats Peru also is examined as part of a potential therapeutic for patients with recurrent depression cases.

The main ingredient in Ayahuasca is a kind of wine from the vines, called caapi, mixed with leaves of other plants of the Amazon region. The mixture is brewed and must first be concentrated before being consumed Ayahuasca is a beverage that is traditionally used in religious ceremonies and healing. This herb can stimulate sensory hallucinations and change the emotional state of a person. In a test of chemical, Ayahuasca contains dimethyltryptamine, harmine, 5-HT2A receptor agonists, monoamine oxidase A (MAO-A), and substances that can prevent growth.

Ayahuasca is categorized as psychedelic-related drinks with drugs that produce hallucinations, in fact, contain compounds that affect the regulation of MAO-A and other systems associated with depression. Preliminary studies led by Flávia de L. Osorio, from the Universidade de São Paulo and published in the Revista Brasileira de Psiquiatria in 2015, a team of researchers consisting of psychiatry investigate the therapeutic effects of Ayahuasca use in depressed patients. On average, patients with depressive symptoms decreased significantly in the first 40 minutes after drinking Ayahuasca and suffered further decline symptoms a day later. The same level of depression is still low after three weeks.

The research group, which is also largely involved in previous studies, examining the potential of Ayahuasca as an anti-depressant in larger samples and investigate its effects on blood flow to the brain.
